The Footballers Union of Zimbabwe (FUZ) wins the Union Impact Award at the 2023 FIFPRO Merit Awards

The Footballers Union of Zimbabwe (FUZ) was this week awarded the Union Impact Award at the 2023 FIFPRO Merit Awards. The union was honoured for it's appeal to lift FIFA's ban on the Zimbabwean national team, with FIFPRO saying that the initiative was a shining example of how unions fight for players.

In 2008 FIFPRO established its Merit Award, to recognise professional footballers who have made a significant contribution to a charitable cause and are socially engaged. Initially a single award, it was recently expanded to it's present format, were five awards are given out. It now honours not only players who use their platform to take action to improve the lives of people in need but football unions which are going above and beyond to improve the welfare of players. The award is worth US$25,000 (as of 2018).

Footballers Union of Zimbabwe is a Union for Zimbabwean Footballers whose formation was influenced by the ever-existing footballers’ social and economic vulnerability. It is currently led by former Dynamos midfielder Desmond ‘Gaza’ Maringwa.
