For all the criticisms we give the label and it's founder, Holy Ten's Samanyanga Sounds has an undeniable knack for unearthing new talent. Whether it's placing a spotlight on voices that need it or nurturing talent through unorthodox methods, the label has a proven track record of success, and the stable's most recent addition is testament to this.
Micky Black is a relatively unknown commodity that has been on the edges of the Zimbabwean hip hop, but now undoubtedly set for stardom. Gifted with distinctive vocals and a penmanship that delivers easily quotable lyrics, Black has an artistry just adjacent to the mainstream. "Usandidaro," his release from a few months ago was a great display of this potential and with Samanyanga Sounds his talent seems set to be harnessed to it's full extent.
The singer is at the centre of the collaborative masterpiece, "Bhema Bhema," an anthem for perseverance that brings together him, Jack Miles, Holy Ten and Banks Wacho. Produced by Zimbabwe, the song has a trap instrumental that perfectly fits Micky Black's baritone laden hook.
Opening with the lines, "Life irikuda maths apa ndakapasa commerce/Tirikudhakwa nema Nyathi but ndotodawo Hennessey," the song is a nuanced reflection on Zimbabwe's socioeconomic environment. The track delves into escapism, mental fortitude and a belief in a greater power above all else.
As an added caviar Micky Black pays homage to Holy Ten on the hook with the lines, "Ndakadzvovera vakanditi Muku, vakanditi Samanyanga unenge Tuku/Hazvibatsire kubleacher woita rombe dzvuku." A couplet that reflects Black's inspiration by his label head and presents a full circle moment for the singer.
With it's latest signee, Samanyanga Sounds seems to be once again following the path of development through collaboration. A proven recipe that catapulted Saintfloew and Michael Magz to national stardom.
"Bhema Bhema" was released with apt visuals that almost perfectly capture the mood the song. Vibrant imagery that balances the gloom of the storytelling. The video was directed by the talented BrendonXG from motionNAUT.
