Chido Dzinotyiwei's Vambo AI wins $100,000 Datamellon AI Ignite Global Finals

Vambo AI, a generative AI startup led by Zimbabwean entrepreneur Chido Dzinotyiwei, has won the $100,000 Datamellon AI Ignite Global Finals, a global accelerator and pitch competition created to discover and support the most promising artificial intelligence startups taking on real-world problems.

After a six-week accelerator program, with mentorship from top global experts, Vambo AI faced off against 10 other startups (several being African) in the global finals for the Datamellon AI Ignite competition.

Dedicated to the preservation of Africa’s indigenous languages, Vambo AI is at frontlines of African artificial intelligence. The startup recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Cassava Technologies to accelerate the creation and distribution of African-trained language models and related AI systems.

The platform supports translation, transcription, content generation, and intelligent search across over 44 African and 20 global languages.

Vambo AI has previously won the Aanit Prize for Social Impact, and it earned a place in Slator’s Top 50 Language AI Startups of 2024.
