Over the years and particularly in recent times, the history of Zimbabwean traditions and even the traditions themselves, have become tales of once upon a time. They have become weathered by imported culture and forgotten from memory by both a lack of practice and a lack of recital.
This slow cultural death has been the ember that ignited Tales of Dzimbahwe Publishing, a publishing house that not only tells stories rooted in the country's cultural but seeks to establish platforms to keep traditions alive. Spearheading the organisation is award winning author and cultural heritage ambassador Chengeto Mayowe.
This Saturday, the 1st of August, the publishing house will be hosting Tanganyika: Nhume Dze Dzimbahwe, a literary and cultural event at Art Farm in Harare.
The event will mark the official launch of five new publications: Ngano: When Spirits Act and Ancient Ones: Earth In The Water both by Chengeto Mayowe, Speaking In Tongues and Izwi: Nhume Vekutanga both by Pastor Farmer, and The Prince of the Zambezi Valley by Mufuka Keith Makoni.
The five publications reflect Tales of Dzimbahwe Publishing’s commitment to preserving indigenous knowledge, promoting African literature, and amplifying Zimbabwean voices through books that educate, inspire, and celebrate the nation’s history and culture.
"Tanganyika: Nhume Dze Dzimbahwe is more than a book launch. It is a celebration of our identity, our history, and our responsibility to preserve African stories for present and future generations. Through these five publications, we continue our mission of ensuring that our heritage is documented, celebrated, and shared with the world," shared organisers.
The programme will feature author engagements, panel discussions, cultural performances, and book-signing sessions, bringing together writers, cultural practitioners, educators, policymakers, development partners, and members of the diplomatic community. Panelists will include National Arts Council of Zimbabwe CEO Napoleon Nyanhi, award winning mbira musician Hope Masike, author and philosopher Joshua Maponga, and award winning broadcaster Tendai "Sokostina" Garwe.
Guests will have the opportunity to interact with the authors and learn more about the stories and ideas behind each publication.
