Fun Fact: Kunta Kinte mixtape Vol 3 featured original new music from Jadakiss, Nas, Maino, Meta Physics, Talib Kweli to name a few and on one of the songs Maino and Talib Kweli actually sent shout outs to Terrie Gunz, Harare Hustler and the whole Kunta Kinte clothing movement.
Zimbabwe's world famous hustler Terrie Gunz is preparing to release Kunta Kinte Mixtape Volume 4 so Greedysouth sat down with him for this exclusive story on how the mixtape started, who he worked with, awards etcetera so sit back relax and take notes!
I kicked off with Kunta kinte conscious clothing mixtape vol 1 in 2003 mixed by UK DJ STORM to help market my clothing brand in Europe and USA. It featured mainly Zim artists such as Metaphysics/ karizma /Jusa and includedthe popular joint by Begotten Sun 'Gadadzva'. Volume 1 did not make that much of an impact until the next year when i teamed up with Storm again to drop VOL 2 which created a big buzz in the UK and at USA university campuses. It was even nominated at the Justo mixtape awards in New York under the Upcoming foreign tape but did not get the top price which went to the Latino raggaton mixjoint.Vol 2 featured the collabo track Metaphysics ft Slum Village- I believe'..it was hosted by Zim Legit/ouo's Dumi Right (Zimbabwe Legit) and had a handful of street bangers .
Then came Vol 3 which is one of the best ever Zim mixtape, and it was produced under the APOC RECORDS/GANDANGA MUSIC label with over 5 000 free cds printed and distributed on the street. It was mixed by Zim dj Mujay who def blended the beats superbly. Heavyweight known rappers contributed exclusive tracks and drop/shout outs.. 4th Disciple [killa army], Maino, Raw Dialects, Stic Man of Dead Prez, UK rapper TY,Canadian Rapper Eclipse,South African Rappers Young Nations and also 3RD World riders, Nas ft Maino on 'Shoot out' joint. We had USA based female ragga artiste Mzery, Zim act OUO, Begotten Sun, Nazareen, Alka Nemo, X-Plastaz [kenya], Inspectah Deck [Wu-Tang] Featuring Metaphysics/ Pandemonium [USA]/mad Barz[gambia]carlprit/truth universal/begotten sun etc..we still bumpin that joint at summer parties in the diaspora right now. It got loads of good reviews on sites like africa's gateway/hiphop world/africanhiphop..it included a mix of artists from different continents and took 2 months to work on.Now we are working on vol 4 which will ft some zim artists like BodybagRay/metaphysics/carlprit/jusa/Roby G/Stunna/Boys retonaz etc..this will alsobe mixed by Dj mujay hosted by Velvet loveJones also ft Zimlegit/pepp/Redrat[jamaica],outspoken tha humble neophyte etc..
