Blessing Chitapa Wins The Voice UK 2020

The UK-based, Zimbabwean-born Blessing Annatoria Chitapa is this year's winner of The Voice UK. The young girl mentored by Olly Murs proved to be a cut above the rest throughout the show with beautiful renditions of timeless classics. Blessing who was only 17 at the time of auditioning was chosen by Olly Murs after he was the only judge to turn around his chair as she sang during auditions. And from only having a quarter of the judges believing in her she won the show.

The Voice UK had been scheduled to initially end earlier this year but it was pushed forward due to coronavirus restrictions. The semi-finals which would've been held as far back as April were only held this month.

The Voice UK finals on Saturday night featured a contest between Jonny Brooks, Gevanni Hutton, Brooke Scullion and Blessing Annatoria Chitapa. In the socially distanced show, the final 4 battled it out in front of a virtual audience. The finalists had pre-recorded their performances in the previous week, which along with the virtual audience was watched by mentors Tom Jones, Will.i.am, Meghan Trainor and Olly Murs.

Blessing absolutely deserves to be crowned the winner of this year’s Voice UK! I’ve always believed in her from the start, and to think that I was the only Coach who turned for her is amazing.

She’s got an incredible voice, and infectious personality and has a bright future ahead of her. I can’t wait to see what she does next.

In the battle of the final two Blessing saw off competition from Jonny Brooks, who was coached by Sir Tom Jones. Chitapa, who currently resides in Dudley in the West Midlands, sang Robbie Williams’ Angels and then alongside her mentor they sang James Bay’s Hold Back The River in the final.

18-year-old Blessing branded her win her "biggest achievement yet". She said, "I am so proud of how far I have come and I’m so intrigued to see what the future holds for me! I’m hoping my new single Angels can bless and inspire people to think about a certain someone in their life who has always been there for them.”
