Tammie Kudita Wins The Creative Category At The Sony World Photography Awards 2021

This is the image that was taken by photographer Tamary Kudita which earned her the honour of winning the creative category of the Open competition at the World Photography Awards. It is entitled African Victorian, and it is a picture of a young black woman wearing a Victorian gown while holding conventional Zimbabwean cooking utensils locally known in Shona as "mugoti" and "msika".

The image probes at stereotypical contextualizing of the black female body and offers an alternative visual language through which a multifaceted African identity is presented.

Organised by the World Photography Organisation, the Sony World Photography Awards are an annual competition that features an Open division which selects "the best single images" across the categories: creative, lifestyle, motion, natural world & wildlife, object, portraiture, street photography, travel, architecture and street photography.

The World Photography Organization recently revealed its Open competition classification winners of the Sony World Photography Awards 2021. According to Synesy over 100 professional photographers were shortlisted in the Open competition with an additional 10 classification winners. The winners are set to receive “the latest digital imaging equipment from Sony” and they will also go on to contend for the total open winner that will be revealed on April 15. That winner will take home the Open Photographer of the Year title and a $5,000 award.

Congratulations to Tammie Kudita and we hope she brings home the big award on April 15.
