Neo-soul/electronic singer-songwriter duo MVM, have released a new single titled, "Shake That." A bold and playful reimagining of an old school nursery rhyme, that transforms nostalgia into euphoric rhythm.
The unapologetic Afro electro pop banger was created during the first MVM & Friends recording camp, a creative incubator built on principles of equity and togetherness. It is a celebration of joy, dance and power.
Built around the instantly recognisable chant, "Shake That" flips childhood innocence into grown, late night euphoria. It is subversive, cheeky and pulsating. A track that invites you to embrace movement, out loud and to be present in your body.
At its core, "Shake That" is about freedom. Freedom in your body. Freedom in your identity. Freedom to take up space and be seen.
The single was created in collaboration with: Shumba Maasai, a UK based, Zimbabwean born musician, multidisciplinary artist and cultural curator. He raps in both English and Shona, using his lyrics to explore identity, resistance and the spiritual journey through the Dunya, the Western material world.
Tahn Solo, a London based R&B artist, weaves neo soul with haunting melodies, while Mary Sho, a singer songwriter hailing from South East London with a worldwide sound which transcends time and space, offers a home to lovers of authentic, live sounds.
The track is produced by OkZharp, a Cape Town born, London based producer and DJ, and Karen Nyame KG. Dubbed as the Goddess of Rhythm, KG’s plethora of African polyrhythms, low end sub basses and energetic drum patterns are surefire to showcase the evolving sound of London’s club music hybridity and bounce.
"Shake That" is mixed and mastered by Turkish, also known as Tumai Salih, bringing clarity and weight to every chant, bassline and drum hit.
Playful, subversive and pulsating, the record feels like a release in every sense of the word.
"It feels so good to be releasing music that’s true to us. We’re really just two girls figuring out life, how to navigate this industry and having a damn good time doing it," shared MVM on the record.
"Our approach to music is an accurate reflection of our approach to life. Not everything has to be profound to have meaning. The creation of music has intrinsic value and we feel more artists should approach music as a sonic playground, a site of freedom where our imagination can run wild. Where we can dream of lightness and be light."
The release marks a new chapter for MVM & Friends, rooted in collaboration, culture and fearless self expression.
