The Top Artists on the South African Rap Scene

The country’s rap scene features a number of iconic names, some of which impacted the rap culture of Zimbabwe and other parts of the continent, and even left an important mark on the worldwide scene. Let’s go over some of the legendary South African musicians that helped the formation of today’s rap culture in the region:

Costa Titch

Costa Titch used to be a dancer before his international career was launched thanks to the breakthrough of his hit Big Flexa in 2022. The rapper had big dreams for the future, as he announced a partnership with Konvict Kulture - Akon’s record label. In his work, he incorporated amapiano, a subgenre of house music that originated in South Africa. Unfortunately, his life tragically ended after he collapsed on the stage during his performance at the Ultra South Africa festival in Johannesburg.

AKA

AKA was born in Cape Town, but he was based in Johannesburg where he established an admirable career as one of the best hip-hop artists in the area. His fame lasted more than 10 years, starting with the launch of his breakout single Victory Lap in 2011. Despite the extremely competitive nature of the country’s hip-hop scene, AKA managed to dominate it until he was brutally killed in a merciless shooting in February 2023.

Nadia Nakai

Nadia Nakai is a famous rapper and television personality who nurtured her passion for both careers even as a teenage girl. Nadia appeared on the show ‘Shoz Niz’, where she won the show’s Mixtape 101 competition, becoming the first female rapper in history that managed to dominate the show. In 2012, Nadia Nakai launched her own record label called ‘Bragga Records’.

KO

KO started his career as a member of the group Teargas, and today he is surely one of the veterans of the country’s hip-hop scene. In fact, on April 19th, he received the Record of the Year Award at the South African Music Awards which is the local equivalent of the Grammys. On top of that, this was the first time a hip-hop record actually received such an honor. KO is one of the local artists who include elements of national culture in their music, which helped shape the current hip-hop identity in the area.

Die Antwoord

Die Antwoord is the best representative of the South African Zef culture. Zef resulted from the political situation that came to be after the first democratic election in the country back in 1994. The situation has led to the use of ‘race-solidarity’ in a sarcastic way, and Die Antwoord is a group of three members that stand out as the authentic Zef people. The band is known for unconventional and expressive performances, with songs like Ugly Boy, I Fink You Freaky, and Baby’s On Fire being worldwide hits. Unfortunately, lately, they have been called out for abuse controversies.
