Roots Rocking Zimbabwe showcases the birth of Zimbabwe's modern music industry and the explosion of creativity displayed by bands of the 1970s and 80s. It was a time of wild experimentation before established genres had crystallised. Rock, rumba, soul and traditional grooves all collide in the collection, which also includes never-before-released tracks by Thomas Mapfumo, Oliver Mtukudzi and many other Zimbabwean artists.
It has received high acclaim from renowned music commentators, with Jim Irvin of Mojo described the album as "a splendid primer for a sound that deserves more attention," and Jason Anderson of Uncut writing that "the songs bristle with an energy that connects with the wider struggle for national liberation happening outside the recording studio."
The physical release of the album came with a booklet containing historical background, band profiles, and archival photographs.
