The Takeover: A melting pot of Zimbabwe's alternative culture

In recent times Zimbabwean creative expression has become a badge of honour that practitioners wear proudly. Be it in music, fashion, dance, poetry or death defying stunts that tempt fate. For a new generation of creatives, to create has become as necessary as to breathe.

This is often simply for the self, and platforms that nurture and showcase such out of bounds creativity have been few and far between. In steps 'The Takeover' - a multidisciplinary triumph at the German Society that fused fire breathers, high fashion, Afrocentric cyphers, and networking.

Making its Harare debut on Saturday, July 4, 2026, the showcase was a breath of fresh air on the capital city's cultural landscape. Spearheaded by multi award winning artist and human rights defender Bhanshee, who served as the project lead, the groundbreaking event successfully bridged the gap between raw, alternative movements and high level corporate networking.

Under the execution of Technical Director Jason Gwanzura, the event drew a massive crowd to construct a bold blueprint aimed at amplifying a unified African voice and preparing the continent for a borderless, creative African future.

The festival floor was alive with dynamic variety, featuring a captivating African circus complete with gravity defying contortionist acts that left the crowd spellbound. The underground alternative scene was powerfully represented throughout the day by the trailblazing collective Rolling Ragerz, bringing an unapologetic street energy that balanced seamlessly with a curated live art exhibition, culminating in a roaring finale where jaw dropping fire breathers took the stage as the night's closing performance.

The festival's musical curation championed both established heavyweights and the next generation of industry changemakers. The stage saw memorable sets from Bhanshee, Noluntu J, and Mas Genesis, while platforming upcoming stars such as Kim Patrick and Sekuru Ro.

These performances were accompanied by a heavy hitting Afrocentric cypher that featured standout lyrical execution from Benefit Tanaka Pinbird, Donne Jovi, and Ma V.

To cap it off, Bhanshee utilized the platform to announce a surprise release, "Aminha," which she performed live for the very first time. The track, masterfully produced by the acclaimed Honey Uchi and meticulously engineered by sonic wizard Jason Gwanzura, was met with instant, roaring acclaim.

"The Takeover was designed to dismantle the barriers between the street level creators who drive culture and the corporate structures that fund it," shared Bhanshee.

"By bringing alternative collectives like Rolling Ragerz, circus performers, and incredible upcoming cypher voices into the same room as industry executives, we are consciously building an ecosystem to amplify a unified African voice and equip our creative industries for an unstoppable African future."

Beyond the auditory and visual art displays, a premium fashion runway sliced through the venue, showcasing avant garde, culturally resonant collections from trailblazing local designers including George Takora, Planet Avur, Daisy Designs, and Kay Atelier. The collections seamlessly mirrored the event's ethos: redefining traditional African aesthetics through a modern, urban, and luxury lens.

The Takeover brought together high end fashion, live music, corporate matchmaking, and raw street elements, and this is a definitive blueprint for alternative cultural events in Zimbabwe.
