Zimbabwe’s underground music scene is one constantly bubbling with new talent, new names who are simply trying to tell their own personal stories as best as they can. Art is the vehicle and experiences are the fuel. This is an analogy that fits perfectly for the rapper M.G Hkh.
"For me, it was all about finding a vehicle that could carry the weight of real stories. Growing up, I saw a lot of different paths, but rap and trap gave me a raw, unfiltered canvas that traditional singing just couldn't touch," shared the artist.
At his core, M.G Hkh believes there's an undeniable power in the rhythm and spoken word that you can channel through hip hop.
"Rap allows you to be direct, vulnerable, and completely honest with the listener. I wanted to create music that hits you right in the chest, something people can lean on when times get tough, and rapping was the only way to deliver that kind of raw energy," he explained.
The rapper defines his sound as "Soulful Shona-Trap," a rap art form deeply inspired by artists like Rod Wave who blend heavy, atmospheric trap beats with deep, emotional storytelling.
"I draw a massive amount of inspiration from the everyday realities, struggles, and triumphs of regular people. Musically, it’s about capturing a specific mood; using those hard-hitting trap drums and soulful undertones to create a space where the lyrics can really breathe and connect with anyone who has ever had to push through adversity," he added.
M.G Hkh's most recent release, "Sadza Rakashisha" is a reflection of this music approach. He uses the term as a metaphor for the bitter and difficult situations we are sometimes forced to swallow in life.
"The motivation behind the lyrics comes from a place of resilience. It touches on family, the pressures of looking after one another, and the internal grit it takes to survive when the tables seem turned against you," he shared.
"I wanted to write something that speaks directly to the community acknowledging the hardships and the "burnt" pieces of life we deal with, but ultimate driving home the message that we still keep moving forward, no matter how tough the circumstances get."
The rapper is determined to make music a full time pursuit, and above everything he hopes his music connects to someone enough to make a difference.
